The best time to shoot maternity session is around 28-34 weeks when the belly is nice and round. Sessions last about 1-1.5 hrs and I’ll photograph a mix of posed portraits and some more artistic and candid shots as well. Focusing on the baby bump, just the mama-to-be and the couple together. I like to go to two to three different locations to give a variety of different looks and backdrops.

what to wear

Long or mid knee length maxi dresses highlights that beautiful baby bump and covers up any areas you feel are “problem” areas. Feel free to add a statement necklace, bracelet, cute hat. For men, I suggest solid and simple clothing.

For my full family sessions I usually shoot for about 1-1.5 hrs and photograph a combination of the whole family, couples, siblings, individual portraits, ect. with a mix of posed portraits and some more artistic and candid shots as well. I like to go to two to three different locations to give a variety of different looks and backdrops.

Please bring a few clothing options and accessories. You can arrive dressed or get your children dressed at the session if you are worried about them getting messy on the way. Please also bring chap-stick or lip gloss for children (helps with chapped lips, they are very hard to Photoshop).
*To be extra prepared, bring snacks & a favorite toy to comfort them if they are feeling overwhelmed at the session.

This is a great to time get to know each other, learn more about you as a couple and get some
amazing images in the meantime!

We will discuss locations, outfits, and any props that will enhance the session. (I love when couples highlight what makes them unique, bring their favorite beverage, and their furry friends!) On the day of the shoot, we will  spend 1-2 hours exploring a few different locations. There will be a mix of posed portraits and some more artistic and candid shots as well. 2-3 outfits works well
to give variety to the gallery.

I will help guide you through various poses, never feeling stiff or awkward. My goal is to create a joyful and fun experience, capturing the couples unique love story in a way that reflects their personalities and style. You’ll walk away with a beautiful gallery of images and we will feel more like friends on the wedding day!

WHAT TO WEAR
Deciding what to wear in family photos can be stressful, as these are photos will be hung on your walls and cherished for years to come. It can seem overwhelming when considering what to wear but it doesn’t need to be. Use these tips to help you pick out the perfect wardrobe for you and your family.

COORDINATING - NOT MATCHING.
Long gone are the days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching. Instead, pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. If you choose a few neutral colors like gray and denim, you can add in one to two other colors to brighten it up. Adding in just one or two simple patterns with those colors in them can really tie everything together.

DON'T FORGET ACCESSORIES.
Accessories not only add to your outfit but they can be fun to use in photos. Think fun necklaces, scarves, jackets, and sunglasses. I also love hats, vests, fun boots and even bow ties or suspenders. Even throwing these items in for a few shots will give lots of variety and character to the images.

TEXTURES AND LAYERS ARE YOUR FRIENDS.

This is all about giving you choice and flexibility, don’t shy away from different textures. Lace, fur, tweed and chunky all photograph really pretty. Layering up can give you a very different look by simply adding a jacket, vest, or tie.

COMFORT MATTERS!
We have all seen the perfectly styled outfit for kids, and many times they look really cute. But if those kids aren’t comfortable, they will let you know, it you will be able to see it in the photos. Make sure to keep everyone’s comfort level in mind. A tutu may sounds like a great idea, but if it’s not very warm out, and your kids may be freezing, it’s a recipe for disaster. Having a backup plan for warm vs. cold temps is a good idea.

PLAN AHEAD!
Once you book your session, start thinking of the clothes right away. You may think certain clothes will fit your kids or that one dress is clean. If you wait until the day of or day before you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting, being dirty or wrinkled. Think about the season you will be shooting in and what the colors will be like outside.

SAY NO TO CHARACTERS.
Yes, your little one may love their Frozen shirt or Teenage mutant ninja turtle sweatsuit, but I suggest leaving those at home. Just like tons of patterns, characters on shirts can be pretty distracting.

THINK TIMELESS.
Fashions and styles come and go. You want your family photos to be timeless, so it is best to aim for more of a classic look, not one that instantly dates you. These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. By choosing simple, classic clothes but making sure you add in some of your own personal style will you will help give your images a timeless feel.

WHAT TO WEAR
Bring your own style to the shoot! Choose clothes that feel like you, fit well - that you feel confident, comfortable and pretty in.

COORDINATING - NOT MATCHING.
Make sure you and your partners outfits complement each other without being too matchy.

THINK OF THE SEASON.
Take the season into account when choosing your clothes. Hot summer days call for breathable outfits – flowy sun dresses for the beach or cut off shorts and tops, while fall and winter shoots are the perfect time to rock those cozy layers. Hats, scarves, vests and fur are fun and add personality to the shoot.

WHEN IN DOUBT- NEUTRALS .
Neutrals are always great too. A good pair of jeans or khakis, and switching out tops can make it easy and still give variety.
